An RSJ (Rolled Steel Joist) is a structural steel beam used to support the load in a building when existing walls or supports are removed or altered. RSJs are also commonly referred to as steel beams, universal beams, I-beams or H-beams due to their distinctive shape and strength.

RSJs redistribute weight from above - such as floors, roofs and extensions - ensuring structural stability and safety throughout your property.

You’ll typically need an RSJ in projects like:

• Removing load-bearing walls to open up space
• Extensions & loft or basement conversions
• Installing large bi-fold or sliding doors

We follow a careful installation process designed for safety and compliance. 1. Initial Consultation & Site Survey We assess the proposed work and discuss the project with you. 2. Independent Structural Engineer If structural calculations or a report are required, we can recommend an independent structural engineer whom we regularly work with. The engineer will contact you directly, explain their fees and invoice you separately. The completed report and calculations belong to you, and you are under no obligation to appoint Up Close Construction for the building work. 3. Building Work Quotation Once the structural information is available, we can prepare a clear quotation for the construction work. 4. Preparation & Safety Measures If you appoint us, we prepare the site and install the temporary supports required before work begins. 5. RSJ Installation Our installers position and secure the RSJ in accordance with the structural engineer's plans and calculations. 6. Building Regulations The installation is made available for the required building control inspections and approval.

Construction costs depend on the beam size, location of the work, site access, structural complexity and the level of finishing required. If an independent structural engineer is needed, they will contact you directly to explain their fees and will invoice you separately. Their fees are not included in our building-work quotation. Our quotation can cover the agreed RSJ supply, delivery, installation labour and finishing work. Building control fees will also be clearly identified where applicable.
